Michael Addition Reactions with η2-Coordinated Anisoles: Controlling the
Stereochemistry of the para and Benzylic Carbons. — Several η2-coordinated ani14- 064 sole complexes such as (III) are treated with various Michael acceptors in the presence
of Lewis or Broensted acids to give the 4H-anisolium complexes (V). Two pairs of
diastereoselectivity are found for these complexes: the endo/exo diastereoselectivity
concerning the arrangement of the Michael acceptor with respect to the unbound portion of the aromatic ring and the facial diastereoselectivity concerning the unidirectional and antipodal arrangement of the methoxy and imidazole units. High diastereoselectivities in both cases are observed for the complexes of the N-butylimidazole complex
(Vb). Decomplexation of these compounds is accomplished by oxidation. —
