Novel Formation and Use of a Nicholas Carbocation in the Synthesis of Highly
Tetrahydrofurans. — The novel cyclopropyl alkynyldicobalt hexacarbo14- 109 Substituted
nyl complex (V) is prepared according to the scheme. The ring opening of (V) with
BF3·Et 2O affords a reactive 1,3-dipole via cleavage of a C—C σ-bond providing a
unique entry to the Nicholas carbocation system. This dipole can be employed in the
preparation of highly substituted tetrahydrofurans (VII) by reaction with aldehydes
