Determination of the Crystal Structure of Mg(AlH4)2 by Combined X-Ray and
Neutron Diffraction. — The title compound crystallizes in space group P3m1 with
Z = 4 as determined by powder X-ray and neutron diffraction at 8, 111, and 295 K. The
structure of Mg(AlH4)2 consists of slightly distorted A lH-4 tetrahedra connected via
six-coordinated Mg atoms in a distorted octahedral environment, forming a sheet-like
arrangement. The distortion of the AlH4 tetrahedra decreases with increasing temperature, whereas that of the MgH6 octahedra increases with increasing temperature. —
