Binary Indides AInx (x: 1, 2, 4; A: Ca, Sr, Ba, K, Rb) — Studies on Structural
Chemistry and Chemical Bonding. — The structures of new (x = 1) and known
(x = 2, 4) alkaline earth metal indides AInx are (re)determined by single crystal XRD.
The diindides CaIn2, SrIn2 (hexagonal, space group P63/mmc, Z = 2) and BaIn2 (orthorhombic, Imma, Z = 4) contain three-dimensional tetrahedral indium networks. In
accordance with their interpretation as classical Zintl compounds, the calculated density of states show pseudo band gaps. Among the tetraindides only BaIn4 (tetragonal,
I4/mmm, Z = 2) can be explained with the extended Zintl concept; the electron-deficient isotypic alkali metal indides KIn4 and RbIn4 show the structural consequences of
the depopulation of the highest occupied states. The monoindides CaIn, SrIn, und BaIn
crystallize with three different new structure types: In CaIn (tetragonal, I4/mmm,
Z = 8) isolated In4 squares are present. In contrast, SrIn (orthorhombic, Fdd2, Z = 32)
and BaIn (orthorhombic, Cmcm, Z = 8) show three bonded In2- atoms which are connected to form layers and ladders, respectively. — (WENDORFF, M.; ROEHR*, C.;
