Alumina Supported Potassium Permanganate: An Efficient Reagent for
Dehydrogenation of 2-Imidazolines under Mild Conditions. —
16- 111 Chemoselective
Aryl- and alkylimidazolines (I) are dehydrogenated to imidazoles (II) by potassium
permanganate supported on alumina. Oxidation of alkylimidazolines occurs selectively
in the presence of arylimidazolines, cf. (Ia) and (Ic). Chemoselective oxidation of imidazolines to the corresponding imidazoles also occurs in the presence of different functional groups including acetal, aldehydes Thp ether sulfide, and ether. Advantages
associated with this procedure include high yields, short reaction times, easy work-up,
very mild reaction conditions and excellent chemoselectivity. —
