Tocopherol Long Chain Fatty Alcohols Decrease the Production of TNF-α and NO
Radicals by Activated Microglial Cells. — Fatty alcohols (VIII) are prepared by a
four-step procedure via the key intermediates (VI). The chroman moieties are formed
racemically by condensation of allylic alcohols (VI) with trimethylhydroquinone (VII)
in the presence of aluminum chloride and nitromethane. Deprotection of the terminal
OH group occurs in situ to give the chromanols (VIII). Their activities on the modulation of microglial activation clearly depend on the length of the side chain. Chromanol
(VIIIb) exhibits the most potent inhibition of secretion on nitric oxide and tumor
necrosis factor-α by lipopolysaccharide-activated microglia. — (MULLER, T.;
