Fused Stars and Nano-Stripes in the Rare Earth Halide La7Sb11Br4. —
The title compound is prepared by solid state reaction of a stoichiometric mixture of
La, LaBr3 and Sb (sealed Ta tube, argon atmosphere, 950 °C, 7 d). La7Sb11Br4 crystallizes in the orthorhombic space group Pnma with Z = 4 (single crystal XRD). The structure contains [La8Br8] elongated octagon stars, Sb-centered [La3Sb]∞ trigonal prismatic
columns, and stripes of Sb squares. Computational analysis shows that La7Sb11Br4 has
one framework electron per formula in the La metal trigonal prisms but otherwise is
electron-deficient in the intermetallic part. Susceptibility measurement revealed temperature-independent Pauli paramagnetism. — (ZHENG*, C.; MATTAUSCH, H.; LI,
