Bi7-δNi 2Br 5 (δ ≈ 1/9) — A Quasi One-Dimensional Metal with Modulated Crystal
Structure. — Black crystals of the title compound are obtained in high yield from a
stoichiometric melt of Bi, BiBr3 and Ni (520→320 °C, evacuated quartz tube, 7 d).
Powder and single crystal XRD results reveal that Bi7-δNi2Br5 has a modulated crystal
structure at room temperature. Two different types of modulation are observed. The
average structures, which are almost the same for the two types of crystals, can be
described in the orthorhombic space group Cmcm (Z = 4). Measurements of the electric
conductivity on Bi7-δNi2Br5 single crystals as well as calculations of the electronic band
structure reveal metallic conductivity along [100] and semiconducting behavior in the
other directions. In low magnetic fields, Bi7-δNi2Br5 shows weak but temperature-dependent paramagnetism and antiferromagnetic ordering below 9 K. — (WAHL, B.
