The Real Structure of YbSi1.4 — Commensurately and Incommensurately Modulated Silicon Substructures. — Pure YbSi1.4 is prepared by reaction of the elements
at 890 °C (sealed Nb tubes). The compound crystallizes in the orthorhombic space
group Cmcm with Z = 8 (single crystal XRD). The structure contains blocks with three
sheets of trigonal Yb6 prisms that are connected to each other by face-sharing. Two of
these prism sheets are fully occupied by Si whereas the prisms of the middle sheet are
occupied only to 80% by Si (detailed structure description and discussion). —
