Synthesis and Crystal Structure of (Sb2Te2)[AlCl4], a Compound Containing a
Heteroatomic Polymeric Cation (Sb2 T e+2 )n. — Dark red crystals of the title compound are prepared by reaction of Te, Sb, SbCl3, NaCl, and excess AlCl 3 (evacuated
glass tube, 130 °C, 14 d; sublimation of the excess AlCl3 at 130→110 °C).
(Sb2Te2)[AlCl4] crystallizes in the triclinic space group P1 with Z = 8. The structure
contains almost regular tetrahedral [AlCl4]- anions and one-dimensional polymeric
(Sb2 T e+2 )n cations. The unit cell contains two symmetrically independent but almost
isostructural cations which form strands made up of four-membered stacked Sb2Te2
rings. These rings are connected with neighboring rings alternatingly via two, three,
and four covalent bonds. Predominantly Sb—Te bonds are present, to a smaller amount
Sb—Sb bonds, while Te—Te bonds are not observed. — (BECK*, J.; SCHLUETER,
