Liquid-Phase Oxidation of Sulfides by an Aluminum (and Titanium) tert-Butoxide—tert-Butyl Hydroperoxide System. — Typical representatives of aliphatic,
alkylaromatic, and aromatic sulfides (I) are oxidized by the title system to the corresponding sulfones. Sulfones (II) are the single products. The oxidation is induced by
electron-excited dioxygen formed upon thermal decomposition of intermediate metal-containing peroxy trioxides. The title system is a more efficient oxidant than photoinduced dioxygen. Sulfides (Ia)-(Ic) are also oxidized by using titanium tetra-tert-butoxide under similar conditions with the same rate and efficiency.
