Reaction and Solvation of Sodium in Hydrogen Bonded Solvent Clusters. —
The reactive scattering of (H2O) n (n ≤ 160) and (NH3)n (n ≤ 250) clusters with 1 to 60
Na atoms is characterized by photoionization and time-of-flight mass spectrometry. In
the case of NH3 finally pure Na clusters are produced. The H2O clusters, in contrast,
react with the captured Na until pure, even numbered Na(NaOH)m cluster are formed.
The additional Na atom serves together with the solvent water molecules as catalyst for
