Synthesis, Cation Ordering, and Magnetic Properties of the
(Sb1-xPbx)2(Mn1-y Sby)O4 Solid Solutions with the Sb2MnO4-Type Structure. —
Single phase samples of the title solid solutions (0.0 ≤ x ≤ 0.608, 0.0 ≤ y ≤ 0.372) are
synthesized by solid state reaction of PbO, Sb2O3, MnO, Mn2O3, and MnO2 (evacuated
silica tubes, 650 °C, 50—100 h). The samples are characterized by powder XRD,
XANES, ED, HREM, and EDX. The solid solutions crystallize in the tetragonal space
group P42/mbc with Z = 4. Their structure closely resembles that of the parent Sb2MnO4
structure. The substitution of Sb by Pb results in the oxidation of Sb3+ to Sb5+, which
replaces Mn2+ cations within the rutile-type chains. The dilution of the magnetic sublattice by Sb5+ suppresses long-range magnetic order. — (ABAKUMOV*, A. M.; et
