Carbothermic Reduction of Anatase and Rutile. — The most widely used process
for TiC production, the carbothermic reduction of TiO2 is characterized using a combination of thermogravimetric analysis and XRD. The reduction of rutile starts at about
830 °C, whereas reduction of anatase begins at 875 °C. The initial products are Ti5O9
and Ti4O7 with the latter being the last apparently stable phase prior to TiC formation.
