Synthesis and Characterization of Two Quaternary Thorium Chalcophosphates:
Cs4Th 2P6S18 and Rb7Th 2P6Se21. — Single crystals of the title compounds, also formulated as Cs4Th2(P2S6)3 (I) and Rb 7Th 2(PSe4)3(P 2Se 6)1.5 (II), are prepared by reaction of
thorium, phosphorus, and sulfur or selenium in Cs2S5 and Rb2Se5 reactive fluxes
(500 °C, sealed silica tube, 12 d). Both compounds crystallize in the triclinic space
group P1 with Z = 2. The structure of (I) consists of (Th 2P6S18)4- layers separated by
layers of cesium cations and only contains the (P2S6)4- building block. The structure of
(II) consists of linear chains of (Th2P6Se 21)7- separated by rubidium cations and contains
both (PSe4)3- and (P2Se6)4- building blocks. Optical band gap measurements show that
compound (I) has a band gap of 2.8 eV and compound (II) has a band gap of 2.0 eV.
