Electrochemical Synthesis, Crystal Structure, and Photomagnetic Properties of a
Three-Dimensional Cyano-Bridged Copper—Molybdenum Complex. — Dark
purple single crystals of Cs2Cu7[Mo(CN)8]4·6H 2O are electrochemically prepared by
reducing a mixed aqueous solution of Cu(NO3)2 and Cs3[Mo(CN)8] at a constant potential of +500 mV vs Ag/AgCl. As revealed by single crystal XRD, the compound crystallizes in the tetragonal space group I4/mmm with Z = 1. The structure consists of a
three-dimensional cyano-bridged Cu—Mo bimetallic assembly. The compound exhibits spontaneous magnetization with a Curie temperature of 23 K if it is irradiated with
450—500 nm light at 5 K. This photomagnetism is explained by electron transfer from
MoIV to Cu II and ferromagnetic ordering between MoV (S = 1/2) and Cu II (S = 1/2). —
