Crystal Structure and Thermal Behavior of the Mixed-Valent Basic Mercury
Nitrate H gI2 (OH)(NO3)·HgIIO. — Single crystals of the new title compound are obtained unintentionally from the hydrothermal reaction of Hg, AgNO3, and Na2HAsO4
(2:2:1 molar ratio, 220 °C, autoclave, 4 d). Hg2(OH)(NO3)·HgO crystallizes in the
orthorhombic space group Pbca with Z = 8. The new structure type is composed of two
types of Hg—O zig-zag-chains running perpendicular to each other and N O-3 groups.
One type of chain consists of Hg—Hg—OH units with a Hg—Hg distance of 2.514 Å
typical for the Hg2 dumbbell, whereas the other one is made up of O—Hg—O units
with short Hg—O distances of about 2.02 Å. Weak hydrogen bonding between the OH
