Control of Nanometer-Scale Tunnel Sizes of Porous Manganese Oxide Octahedral
Molecular Sieve Nanomaterials. — Manganese oxide nanomaterials with 1x1 (I),
2x3 (II), and 2x4 (III) tunnel structures are synthesized hydrothermally from Na-birnessite in H2O at pH values of 1.0, 7.0, and 13.0, resp. (autoclave, 180—240 °C, 2 d).
The samples are characterized by XRD and FESEM. The compositions of the (III), (II),
and (I) tunnel materials are (Na,3H2O)2Mn12O24, (Na,H2O)2Mn10O20, and Mn4O8, respectively. Materials (II) and (III) may be used for selective catalysis of volatile organic
compound mineralization, benzyl alcohol oxidation, and olefin epoxidation. For (I),
which has a pore size of 2.3 x 2.3 Å, application as acidic sensor or as material in
