Crystal Growth Features and Properties of Layered Rare Earth and Barium
Cobaltates. — High quality single crystals of LnBaCo2O5+δ (0 < δ < 1; Ln: Pr, Eu, Gd,
Tb, Dy) with rectangular shape and average dimensions of 5 x 5 x 1 mm as well as bulk
single crystals of the new phases LnBaCo4O7 (Ln: Ho, Y, Tb) are grown for the first
time from Ln2O3 in a 2BaO—3CoO flux (1000—1050 °C, 12 h). The samples are characterized by powder XRD and susceptibility measurements in the temperature range
2—300 K. Except for the Pr-based single crystals (space group Pmmm) the
LnBaCo2O5+δ crystals have tetragonal symmetry (space group P4/mmm). The new
compounds LnBaCo4O7 (Ln: Ho, Y, Tb) crystallize in the hexagonal space group
