Synthesis and Structural Studies of the A-Site Substituted Bismuth Double
Perovskites, Ba2-xSr xLuBiO6. — Seventeen members of the title solid solution series
are prepared by solid state reactions of stoichiometric quantities of Bi2O3, Lu2O3,
BaCO3, and SrCO3 (about 1000 °C, 200 h). As revealed by a combination of powder
XRD and neutron diffraction methods the compounds all adopt a double perovskite-type structure. As the average ionic radius of the A-site cations (Ba/Sr) decreases
the LuO6 and BiO6 polyhedra tilt and the structure changes from cubic Fm3m
(0 < x < 0.375) via monoclinic I2/m (0.375 < x < 1.0) to monoclinic P21/n
