Synthesis of the Thioborate Crystal ZnxBa 2B2S5+x (x ≈ 0.2) for Second Order NonOptical Applications. — The title compound is synthesized from mixtures of
27- 007 linear
BaS, ZnS, and B2S3 (900—450 °C). As revealed by powder and single crystal XRD it
crystallizes most probably in the noncentrosymmetric tetragonal space group I42m.
The structure contains isolated trigonal planar (BS3)3- units. The compound exhibits
strong second harmonic generation effects, about 50 times greater than that of α-SiO2,
and has a wide transparent range from the visible to the mid-IR region. In addition, it
shows a much higher laser damage threshold than that of other sulfur-based nonlinear
optical materials. The title compound is an excellent candidate material that has high
nonlinear optical properties combined with wide transmission and high damage thresholds for second order nonlinear optical application in both the visible and IR region.
