Preparation and Optical Characterization of Yb3Sb 5O12: Discussion of Its Suitfor Laser Operation. — The title compound is synthesized by solid state reac27- 008 ability
tion from mixtures of Yb2O3 and Sb2O3 (vacuum. 963 K, 7 d). As revealed by powder
XRD, Yb3Sb5O12 crystallizes in the cubic space group I43m with Z = 4. The compound
is further characterized by 9 K optical absorption, photoluminescence, and 300 K
Raman spectroscopy. It shows a large splitting for the 2F7/2 ground state, and a moderate
electron—phonon coupling. Favorable perspectives for laser emission around 1067 nm
