Metal-Rich Chalcogenides. Synthesis, Structure, and Bonding of the Layered
Lu11Te4. Comparison with the Similar Sc8Te3 and Ti11Se4. — Lu11Te4 is prepared by
arc melting of a stoichiometric mixture of Lu2Te3 and Lu followed by annealing at
1300 °C. The compound crystallizes in the monoclinic space group C2/m with Z = 6
(single crystal XRD). The structure consists of two independent condensed puckered
sheets of Lu separated by individual Te atoms. The geometric structure differs from
those of Sc8Te3 and Ti11Se4 (also space group C2/m) by displacements of pairs of atoms.
Close electronic similarities of the three structures are demonstrated by EHTB results
in terms of both effective atom charge and bond overlap population trends between
