Synthesis of the Ti3SiC2 by Solid State Reaction Below Melting Temperature of Si.
— The title compound is synthesized from a powder mixture of TiC0.67 and Si with a
molar ratio of 3:1 by heat treatment in the temperature range of 900—1340 °C under
Ar atmosphere. The samples are characterized by XRD and SEM. It appears that high
purity Ti3SiC2 can be prepared by optimizing the Si contents in the powder mixtures
even at 900 °C. The title compound is known as one of the ceramic materials developed
for engineering applications due to its exceptional machinability, moderately high
strength, and excellent damage tolerance at room temperature. — (HWANG, S. S.;
