Crystal Structure and Mechanical Properties of SrSi7N10. — Single crystals of the
title compound are prepared from Sr, Si3N4, and SiO2 (1700 °C, 20 h), or from Sr and
Si3N4 (1650 °C, 12 h). As revealed by single crystal XRD, the compound crystallizes
in the monoclinic space group Pc with Z = 2. The three-dimensional structure contains
both edge-sharing and corner-sharing SiN4 tetrahedra. The title compound shows a
hardness value of 16.1 GPa which is comparable to α-sialons and α-Al2O3. —
