Characterization of Oligomers of AlCl: Al—Cl versus Al—Al Bonding —
of the title compound are prepared by matrix isolation techniques and char30- 002 Oligomers
acterized by IR and Raman spectroscopy and by quantum chemical calculations at the
DFT and MP2 levels of theory. The minimum structure of the trimer exhibits CS symmetry and features direct Al—Al bonds, two terminal Al—Cl bonds, and one bridging
Cl atom. Thermodynamic properties such as the enthalpy change for each of the oligomerization steps are calculated and reveal that matrix isolation represents the optimal
