Ternary Indides LnIrIn (Ln: Ce, Sm, Gd—Ho), LnIrIn2 (Ln: La—Nd, Sm), and
Yb2IrIn8. — The new title compounds are synthesized from the elements at
1300—1470 K (sealed Ta-tubes, high-frequency furnace). Single crystals are obtained
following special annealing procedures. Except PrIrIn2, all structures are refined from
single crystal XRD data. The compounds LnIrIn with Ln: Ce, Sm, Gd, Tb, Dy, and Ho
crystallize in the hexagonal space group P62m with Z = 3 (ZrNiAl type structure). The
Ir and In atoms in these compounds form a three-dimensional network in which the Ln
atoms fill distorted hexagonal channels. The indium atoms in the indium-richer intermetallics LnIrIn2 (Ln: La, Ce, Nd, Sm) with orthorhombic MgCuAl2 type structure
(space group Cmcm, Z = 4) form a three-dimensional substructure of distorted corner-sharing In4 tetrahedra. These tetrahedra and the Ir atoms build up a three-dimensional network in which the Ln atoms fill distorted pentagonal channels. Yb2IrIn8 crystallizes in the tetragonal space group P4/mmm (Z = 1) and is isotypic with Ho2CoGa8.
