Synthesis and Crystal Structures of PrSe2 and NdSe2. — Single crystals of the title
compounds are grown by reaction of stoichiometric mixtures of Pr or Nd and Se
(900 °C, 7 d; sealed silica tube) followed by chemical vapor transport with I2
(800→600 °C, 14 d). Both compounds crystallize in the monoclinic space group P21/a
with Z = 4 (CeSe2-type structure). The crystal structures consist of puckered double
layers of Pr (Nd) and Se atoms and planar Se layers stacked in an alternating way along
the crystallographic c axis. The Se atoms of the planar layers form diselenide dumbbells
with Se—Se distances of 2.467 Å in PrSe2 and 2.476 Å in NdSe2. — (DOERT*, T.;
