Ternary Rare Earth Platinum Germanides Ln2Pt9Ge3 (Ln: Y, Tb—Lu) Crystallizing with a Monoclinic Structure Closely Related to Orthorhombic Y2Co3Ga9. —
The new series of germanides Ln2Pt9Ge3 (Ln: Y, Tb—Lu) is prepared by arc melting of
pressed pellets of the elements and subsequent annealing at 900—1000 °C. The isotypic germanides crystallize in a new monoclinic structure type, space group C2/c, Z = 4
(powder XRD and single crystal data for Ln: Tb, Dy, Ho). The structure may be described as an ABAB stacking of two different pseudo-trigonal layers of compositions
Ln2Pt3 (A) and Pt2Ge (B). All compounds are metallic conductors. Y2Pt 9Ge 3 and
Lu2Pt9Ge3 are Pauli paramagnets, while the other phases show Curie paramagnetic behavior with antiferromagnetic ordering temperatures ≤5 K. Standard enthalpies and entropies are given. — (PROTS*, Y.; BORRMANN, H.; SCHNELLE, W.; JEITSCHKO,
