Concomitant Monoreduction and Hydrogenation of Unsaturated Cyclic Imides to
Lactams Catalyzed by Ruthenium Compounds. — Two ruthenium complexes selectively catalyze the monoreduction of cyclic imides into lactams. These complexes
generate catalytic systems that are able to promote in the appropriate cyclic imides two
catalytic reactions: the monoreduction of one carbonyl group and the hydrogenation of
carbon—carbon double bonds, including aromatic structures. The binuclear ruthenium
complex Ru2Cl 4(p-cymene) 2 is found to be more active than the hydride cluster
[Ru4H6(p-cymene) 4]Cl 2. The presence of the unsubstituted NH bond in the cyclic imides is crucial for the reduction of one carbonyl group. — (AOUN, R.; RENAUD,
