New Water-Containing Phase Derived from the Sr3Fe2O7-δ Phase of the RuddlesStructure. — A novel water-containing derivative of Sr 3Fe 2O7-δ is pre31- 022 den—Popper
pared by intercalation of H2O. The intercalated water molecules are believed to reside
within the (SrO)2 double-layer block, probably accompanied by additional protons. Independent of the value of δ, all the Sr3Fe2O7-δ samples transform to the water derivative
when subjected to an ambient (humid) atmosphere, whereas the speed of the derivative-phase formation increases with increasing δ. Reversible dehydration of the derivative phase occurs upon heating in two distinguishable steps below about 230 °C. —
