Development and Characterization of Metal-Diboride-Based Composites Toughened with Ultra-Fine SiC Particulates. — Ceramics based on ZrB2 and ZrB2 + HfB2
32- 007 containing
up to 15 vol% ultra-fine SiC particles are characterized with respect to
sinterability, microstructure, and thermomechanical properties. The microstructure
is homogeneous and rather fine, with M(C,N) and MO2 (M: Zr, Zr/Hf) as the main secondary phases, and the ultra-fine SiC particles are dispersed uniformly throughout the
bulk. The thermomechanical data of both the materials offer a promising combination
of properties: about 16 GPa of microhardness, 5 MPa·m1/2 of fracture toughness, and
