Crystal Structure of the Mixed-Valent Basic Mercury Nitrate
H gI2 (NO3)2稨g II(OH)(NO3)稨gII(NO3)2�gIIO [= Hg8O4(OH)(NO3)5]. ?
Light-yellow single crystals of the HgI/HgII mixed-valent title compound are obtained
as a byproduct from a melt consisting of stoichiometric amounts of Hg2(NO3)2� 2O
and Hg(OH)(NO3) (Pt crucible, 85 癈, 30 min). Hg8O4(OH)(NO3)5 crystallizes with a
new structure type in the monoclinic space group C2/c with Z = 4. The structure consists of almost linear [O?HgII?O] and [O?HgI?HgI?O] building blocks. The different types of mercury?oxygen units form a complex three-dimensional network
exhibiting large cavities which are occupied by the nitrate groups. One of the three crystallographically independent nitrate groups is disordered. ? (WEIL, M.; Z. Anorg.
