La9Sb16Br3 and Ce9Sb16Cl 3: Stars and Stripes in Rare Earth Halide and Intermetallic Compounds. — The title compounds are synthesized by solid state reaction of
Sb, La or Ce, and LaBr3 or CeCl3 (argon, 950 °C; 7 d for La and 18 d for Ce; >90%
yield). La9Sb 16Br3 and Ce9Sb16Cl3 are isotypic and crystallize with a new structure type
in the hexagonal space group P63/m (Z = 2). These solids are the most metal-rich members in the reduced rare earth metal halide family and contain partial structures which
are characteristic of reduced halides and intermetallic phases, i.e. [Ln6X6] (Ln: La, Ce;
X: Cl, Br) hexagon stars, Sb-centered [Ln3Sb] trigonal prismatic columns, and stripes
of Sb square meshes. Computational analysis indicates that their electronic structure is
valence-precise in the reduced halide part, but electron-deficient in the intermetallic
