Associating Borate and Silicate Chemistry by Extreme Conditions: High-Pressure
Synthesis, Crystal Structure, and Properties of the New Borates Ln3B5O12 (Ln:
Er—Lu). — The new title compounds are synthesized from stoichiometric mixtures
of Ln2O3 (Ln: Er—Lu) and B2O3 (10 GPa, 1000 °C). The Ln 3B5O12 compounds crystallize with a novel structure type in the orthorhombic space group Pmna with Z = 4
(single crystal XRD). All B atoms exhibit exclusively tetrahedral oxygen coordination.
The BO4 tetrahedra are connected to layers that are separated and charge-balanced by
the rare earth cations. The compounds are further characterized by vibrational spectroscopy and magnetic measurements. — (EMME, H.; VALLDOR, M.; POETTGEN, R.;
