New Hydrothermal Synthesis and Structure of Th2(PO4)2(HPO4)·H2O: The First
Structurally Characterized Thorium Hydrogenphosphate. — The title compound
is prepared by hydrothermal reaction of Th(NO3)4·5H2O with H3PO4 (H 2O, 190 °C,
autoclave, 7 d). Th2(PO4)2(HPO4)·H2O crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P21
with Z = 2 (powder XRD). The structure consists of layers of both Th atoms and PO4
groups, alternating with layers formed by HPO4 groups and water molecules. Thermal
degradation of the compound leads to Th4(PO4)4P2O7, a ceramic material already described in the field of the immobilization of tetravalent actinides. — (SALVADO*, M.
