The Myth of Cyanide Always Being a Strong-Field Ligand: Synthesis and
Structural Characterization of Homoleptic S = 2 Pentacyanochromate(II),
[Cr(II)(CN)5]3-, and Nonacyanodichromate(II), [Cr(II)2(CN)9]5-. — Compounds
(II) and (III) are characterized by UV/VIS spectroscopy and magnetic measurements.
As revealed by single crystal XRD, both compounds crystallize in the triclinic space
group P1 with Z = 2. In (II) each CrII center is pentacoordinate, with both square-pyramidal and distorted trigonal bipyramidal structures present. The structure of (III) contains [Cr2(CN)9]5- units which are composed of two square-pyramidal [Cr(CN)4]2- moieties bridged by a cyanide ion. The magnetic measurements are indicative for S = 2
