An Efficient and Chemoselective Method for Protection of Thiols Catalyzed by
Aluminumdodecatungstophosphate (AlPW12O40), as a Highly Water-Tolerant
Lewis Acid Catalyst. — A selective protection of thiols in the presence of OH group
is achieved with diphenylmethanol and catalytic amounts of AlPW12O40. The oxidative
deprotection with iodine is also demonstrated. The disulfide products [cf. (IV)] can be
