Structural Refinement of the High-Pressure Phase of Aluminum Trihydroxide: In
situ High-Pressure Angle Dispersive Synchrotron X-Ray Diffraction and Theoretical Studies. — Pressure-induced transitions of gibbsite (aluminum trihydroxide) are
studied by in situ high-pressure ADXRD and a new phase of Al(OH)3 is observed at
2.6 GPa. The new phase crystallizes in the orthorhombic space group Pbca with Z = 8
and has the same layer stacking sequence as the precursor gibbsite. The new high-pressure phase is the highest symmetry structure in the aluminium trihydroxide family.
First-principles calculations of the high-pressure phase were performed to determine
the hydrogen positions and to confirm the structural stability of the new phase. —
