Synthesis, Structural and Microstructural Study of Bi4W0.5Ti0.5O8X (X: Cl, Br)
Sillen—Aurivillius Intergrowths. — The title compounds are prepared by reaction of
stoichiometric mixtures of Bi2O3, BiOX (X: Cl, Br), TiO 2, and WO3 (evacuated silica
tube, 993 K, 24 h). The structures of Bi4W0.5Ti0.5O8Cl (orthorhombic, space group
Cm2m) and Bi4W0.5Ti0.5O8Br (orthorhombic, space group Ic2m) are refined from powder XRD data. The compounds can be described as a regular intergrowth of the simplest
members of Sillen and Aurivillius phases. Structural defects caused by the bromine
substitution are shown by electron diffraction and high-resolution images. —
