Evolution of the Crystal and Electronic Structures of Magnetic
RuSr2-xLaxGdCu2O8 Superconductors upon La Substitution. — The effects of La
34- 013 substitution
on the superconducting and magnetic properties of the title compound
(x = 0 and 0.1) are characterized by powder XRD, SEM, EDS, XANES, EXAFS, and
resistivity and magnetization measurements. La substitution gives rise to a significant
reduction of the superconducting transition temperature (from Tc = 31.8 K for x = 0 to
Tc = 8.8 K for x = 0.1), but also leads to an increase of the magnetic ordering temperature with depressed remanent magnetization. The Tc reduction upon La substitution is
attributed to the depletion of the hole density in the CuO2 layers and the accompanying
