Sn2-2xSbxFexO4 Solid Solutions as Possible Inert Anode Materials in Aluminum
Electrolysis. — Title solid solutions with 0.26 ≤ x ≤ 0.66 are synthesized by solid state
reaction of SnO2, Sb 2O3, and Fe2O3 (1300 °C, 100 h). The compounds crystallize with
the rutile type structure in the space group P42/mnm with Z = 2 (powder XRD). Resistivity measurements indicate semiconducting behavior from room temperature up to
900 °C with about four orders in magnitude decrease of the resistivity. Solubility tests
in the cryolite-alumina melt shows that the steady-state concentration of dissolved tin
for the samples with x = 0.26, 0.36 is significantly lower than that for SnO2. It is concluded that the title solid solution is a promising anode material for Al electrolysis. —
