Thiosilicates of the Rare-Earth Elements. Part 3. KLa[SiS4] and RbLa[SiS4] —
A Structural Comparison. — Single crystals of the title compounds are prepared by
reaction of La, SiS2, and sulfur in a MCl (M: K, Rb) flux (evacuated silica tube, 850 °C,
7 d). KLa[SiS4] crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P21/m with Z = 2 and RbLa[SiS4] in the orthorhombic space group Pnma with Z = 4. In both compounds the La3+
cation is surrounded by 9 sulfide anions in the shape of a tricapped trigonal prism. The
Rb atom in RbLa[SiS4] is coordinated by 11 S atoms which form a pentacapped trigonal
prism, while the K atom in KLa[SiS4] exhibits a bicapped trigonal prismatic environment built up by 8 sulfide ions. The whole structure can be described by anionic

∞ [La(SiS4) ] layers that are separated by the alkali metal cations and the two thiosilicate
