(A19N7)[In4]2 (A: Ca, Sr) and (Ca4N)[In2]: Synthesis, Crystal Structures, Physical
Properties, and Chemical Bonding. — The title compounds are prepared by reaction
of melts of appropriate amounts of the metals with nitrogen at 1120 K for (M19N7)[In4]2
(M: Ca, Sr) or 820 K for (Ca4N)[In2]. The crystal structures are determined by powder
XRD data and, in the case of (Ca19N7)[In4]2, neutron powder diffraction. The
(M19N7)[In4]2 compounds are isotypic with (Ca19N7)[Ag4]2 and crystallize in the cubic
space group Fm3m with Z = 2. The structure contains isolated [In4] tetrahedra embedded in a framework of edge- and vertex-sharing M6N (M: Ca, Sr) octahedra. Six of these
octahedra are condensed by edge-sharing around one central M2+ ion to form M19N6
superoctahedra which are connected three-dimensionally by corner-sharing with further octahedra. The crystal structure of (Ca4N)[In2] (tetragonal, space group I41/amd)
consists of alternating layers of perovskite type slabs of vertex-sharing Ca6N octahedra
