Exploratory Synthesis in Molten Salts: Role of Flux Basicity in the Stabilization
of the Complex Thiogermanates Cs4Pb 4Ge5S16, K2PbGe2S6, and K 4Sn 3Ge 3S14. —
The influence of the Lewis basicity of alkali polysulfide fluxes (M2Sx; M: K, Cs) as a
function of x on the respective reactivities of Pb and Sn with Ge is found to be strong.
The title compounds could be prepared only under low basicity with S:M2S ratios of
≥11. The structures of (IV) (orthorhombic, space group Cmca, Z = 8), (VI) (monoclinic, C2/c, 4), and (VIII) (monoclinic, P21/n, 2) are determined and the complex
frameworks are briefly described. The compounds are semiconductors with band gaps
of 2.6 (IV), 2.85 (VI), and 2.46 eV (VIII). — (PALCHIK, O.; MARKING, G. M.;
