Boron-Induced Hydrogen Localization in the Novel Metal Hydride LaNi3BHx
(x = 2.5—3.0). — A new boride phase LaNi3B is prepared by arc melting of the elements and subsequent annealing at 800 °C (quartz tube, argon, 30 d; up to 90% yield).
The hydrogen-free compound crystallizes with a new orthorhombic structure (space
group Imma, Z = 4). TGA reveals the formation of the hydride phase of title upon hydrogenation of LaNi3B at 20 °C. Single crystal XRD on both the alloy and the hydride
using the same crystal shows an expansion in the a-c plane (by up to ≈8%) and a contraction along b (by ≈3%), while the symmetry changes from Imma to Bmmb (Cmcm)
and the unit cell doubles along a and b. Structural data are given for LaNi3BH2.7 (space
group Cmcm, Z = 16). Four nearly fully occupied interstitial hydrogen sites are located
