Criminal Charges in
Waterslide Death
‘DANGEROUS DESIGN FLAWS’
Authorities say more than a dozen
people were injured on the ride before
Caleb was killed and that it failed

Long before 10-year-old Caleb Schwab was decapitated as he
rode down the world’s tallest waterslide (People, Aug. 29, 2016),
park officials knew the attraction was dangerous, authorities
now say. Schlitterbahn Waterpark co-owner Jeffrey Wayne
Henry and two employees, as well as two companies involved in
building and operating the 17-story Verrückt in Kansas City, Kans.,
were indicted on March 21 on various charges, including reckless
second-degree murder, in Caleb’s death. The allegations—denied
by the accused—detail a “rushed” and irresponsible design
process from the ride’s conception to its opening. Caleb’s dad,
Scott Schwab, said in a statement, “While we as a family continue
to mourn and heal, we thank the community for its continued
prayers and support.” —ADAM CARLSON and CHRISTINE PELISEK

HER LIFE AFTER PRISON
After eight months in federal prison, Abby Lee Miller
was released from custody—and the Dance Moms alum
is slowly reclaiming her independence. “Abby seems like
she’s adjusting well,” a source says of the reality star, 51,
who last May was sentenced to 366 days in the Victorville
Federal Correctional Institution for bankruptcy fraud.
Upon her March 27 release, Miller was transferred to a
court-appointed Los Angeles-area halfway house, where
she is receiving employment counseling and financialmanagement assistance. Allowed to leave the facility
only for preapproved outings, she has begun to
reintroduce everyday excursions (a manicure, church on
Easter Sunday) to her routine. Miller, who dropped 70
lbs. and passed a real estate class while incarcerated, is
slated to leave the halfway house on May 25. “She’s

Becoming a Kennedy
“I met Ted once
years ago; I shook
his hand at a boat
race,” says Clarke,
who plays Kennedy
(above in ’69) in
Chappaquiddick
(left).
When Jason Clarke
was tapped to play Ted
Kennedy in the new drama
Chappaquiddick—about
the 1969 car crash that left
Kennedy’s young passenger Mary Jo Kopechne
dead at the bottom of a
pond—the Australian
actor immediately got to
work nailing the late
senator’s distinct Massachusetts drawl. “The
Kennedys were very
particular in constructing
thought,” says Clarke, 48.
“I used to love listening to
their speeches, particularly the one Ted did at
Bobby’s funeral. It’s amazing oratory.” In addition to
perfecting the voice (with
help from a dialect coach),
Clarke got into character
through research (including a visit to the accident
site off Martha’s Vineyard)
and a minor makeover.
Says Clarke: “We decided
not to go full prosthetics,
but we had a wig, teeth—
enough so that as soon as
you see me, that’s Ted
Kennedy.” —KARA WARNER

Spring break meant family
fun in the sun for amicable

Violet, 12, Seraphina, 9, and

Affleck is shooting Triple

You appeared in Trainwreck; now
you’re in the new comedy Blockers,
playing an overprotective dad. What’s
your secret for getting laughs?
I think a lot of comedy is in the ability
to laugh at yourself. I don’t care
about looking cool or tough—I just
want to make a good project.
Your bare butt makes an appearance
in Blockers—how do you keep it
camera-ready?
One word: squats. They’re my favorite.
You’re engaged to fellow wrestler
Nikki Bella. Do you have any say in
the wedding planning?
I’m involved, but I’m like the last
checkpoint. I’m excited, but I want the
day to be important for Nicole. I know
we’ll have a wonderful future together.
You’ve said you don’t want kids. Has
your thinking on that changed
now that you’ve played a dad?
It’s certainly changed. This movie
helps with that—and working on
my relationship with my
bride-to-be helps with
that. It’s amazing what you
can accomplish if you just

The actor, 43, is helping to promote
early screening for prostate cancer

Why
ICare
My stepfather has prostate cancer and is currently in

hospice, so when I learned in 2017 that my close friend
ABOUT GIVING
works with the Prostate Cancer Foundation, I told her
BACK
I would be happy to help spread the word about the
organization and the importance of early detection.
I made some videos with Funny or Die, and I’ve raised awareness on talk shows.
One in nine men gets diagnosed with prostate cancer, and someone dies of it
every 20 minutes, but men seem reticent to do the digital rectal-exam screening
and talk about the issue for fear of appearing vulnerable. The PCF has raised
more than $700 million and funded more than 2,000 research programs.
They’ve brought effective medicines to the market, and they believe that they
will wipe out prostate cancer in five years. People can help by donating money to
continue the research. Men who are over 40 really need to be making this a part
of their yearly physical. And if you have a man in your
life, I ask you to urge him to get screened for this.

Parents go into overdrive when their girls wanna have the wrong kind of fun

Viswanathan and Gideon Adlon) are nice, smart, completely engaging high
school seniors who decide to go wild at the prom: Each vows to lose her virginity. (It would
be a spoiler to reveal why the challenge is greatest for Sam. For most girls a prom date in
a porkpie hat would be enough of a deal-breaker.) Parents Lisa, Mitchell and Hunter (Leslie Mann,
John Cena and Ike Barinholtz) are verklempt as their angels head out—then Lisa notices that Julie’s

Winning isn’t everything—it may even be tragedy
DRAMA Al Pacino’s voice is an ugly one—
the words emerge in a uneven blare, now
raspingly sharp, now muled, as if being blown
out of a dented bugle packed with horsehair—
but it’s a unique instrument. It externalizes monologues
meant to be kept internal. He’s Penn State football coach Joe
Paterno, collapsing in the aftermath of the sex-abuse scandal
involving his former assistant coach Jerry Sandusky. Pacino’s

MOVIE
DRAMA Young readers may think Chappaquiddick
is a vacation lodge, so let’s explain: On a July night
in 1969, on Chappaquiddick Island, Sen. Ted Kennedy drove of
a bridge and into the water. Ted escaped the car, but passenger Mary Jo
Kopechne was trapped. Rather than go to the authorities, a panicked
Ted consulted his inner circle. After Mary Jo was discovered drowned
Ted set to work on the more important task of rescuing his career. Jason
Clarke’s Ted is pathetic, the rare weasel with chiseled jaw, but his
instinctive wiliness is impressive: When there is no high road, have your
crew build a low one fast. This is one of the most damning movie
portrayals ever of an American politician. (April 6, PG-13)

DOCUMENTARY
Season 6 of the
news magazine kicks of with
Michael Kenneth Williams (The
Wire, Boardwalk Empire) fronting an
investigation into America’s juvenilejustice system—the U.S.A. has the
world’s highest incarceration of kids,
the result of a misguided attempt
to keep “superpredators” of the
streets. The episode suggests positive
alternatives—mentoring, for one—
and ofers intriguing notions about the
psychology of the young “criminal”
mind: Is the adolescent brain, despite
its moral understanding, too unformed
to comprehend how an impulsive,
reckless action can change a life’s
course right on to the grave? Williams
is a fine guide—tough, sad, engaging.
When one teen convict tells Williams
his age, he jokes: “I got socks older than

A miniseries E.M. Forster would love, beginning to...
DRAMA This four-part version of E.M. Forster’s 1910 novel has the good sense not to
compete with the Oscar-winning movie, which was
swooningly rich both in its period detail and its cast
(Emma Thompson, Anthony Hopkins). But Forster himself was
an advocate of good sense—a modest virtue from which might
arise social harmony—and so this adaptation by Kenneth Lonergan (Manchester by the Sea) is excellent in its own right. Margaret
Schlegel (Hayley Atwell), who has an expansive, romantic sensibility and little money, marries Henry Wilcox (Matthew Macfadyen).
He has boatloads of dough, John Singer Sargent whiskers and no
social conscience. Their misalliance triggers horrible family tensions and a few burps of melodrama, but there’s also Forster’s delicate hope that somehow we can all connect.(Starz, April 8, 8 p.m.)

HARRY
During a surprise visit to Belfast on March
23, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle held
hands as they worked their way in tandem
through the crowds. When one fan asked to
see Meghan’s three-diamond engagement
ring, the royal bride-to-be happily showed
it of—and couldn’t help but gush about her
fiancé. “It was the sweetest moment,”
Meghan, 36, said of Harry’s Kensington Palace proposal. “He’s the sweetest guy.”
The guy he is today, of course, has been
33 years in the making—and is a long way
from the impulsive young man who once
shied away from commitment and nearly
lost himself following the 1997 death of his
mother, Princess Diana. For years Harry
had a reputation as a royal rebel, partying
too hard and making tabloid headlines for
bad behavior, including an infamous game
of strip billiards in Vegas. But even after
finding purpose and discipline in the British Army, Harry was still searching for the
missing piece—an equal partner with
whom he could share his life and passions.
“Being a royal has been a romantic curse
for him,” says Diana’s former biographer
Andrew Morton, the author of a new biography of Meghan. (See excerpt, page 44.)
Unlike Harry’s previous girlfriends, who
have struggled under the glare of the spotlight, Meghan—a successful Hollywood
actress, activist and influencer before she
met Harry—shines under it. “She is definitely the one wearing the trousers in their
relationship,” says a royal insider. “She is

own ideas about things, and that’s one of the
things he loves about her.”
Of course, Harry has always held his own and
even as a kid could command a room as the impish
counterpart to his more dutiful big brother, Prince
William. “You’d be a guest at Kensington Palace,
and you’d see a plastic rifle come round the corner
and a boy dressed in an army uniform,” Morton
says. “He used to help the chauffeurs clean the
cars and turn hoses on people. He was cheeky.”
His world was shattered at just 12 years old when
he lost not only his mother but also the chance to
grieve her privately. He and William, then 15, were
forced to walk behind her coin, and “the sound of
people wailing and sobbing will always remain with
them,” says Morton. Of that dark time, Harry told
Newsweek in 2017, “I don’t think any child should
be asked to do that, under any circumstances.”
Exacerbating his pain, the young prince didn’t get
the support he desperately needed from his dad.
“Prince Charles was a loving father, but he would
never discipline his kids,” says Morton. “He would
say to an oicial, ‘You deal with it,’ and put his headphones back on and listen to opera.” Just before her
death, Diana had also been worried about Harry,
who had been held back a year in school. “Diana
called William because he was concerned that all
the attention would be on Harry because he had
been kept down a year at Ludgrove [preparatory
school],” Morton says. “He was concerned there
would be a lot of pressure on Harry.” Whereas William had always been the studious older brother,
Harry “wasn’t particularly academic,” says a Palace
source. “Looking back, he was grieving quite a bit,
but nobody really recognized it that way. He was
quite sad and masked it with this naughtiness, but
there was a vulnerable little boy in there.”
By his 20s, Harry’s struggles became even more
apparent. “He was a troubled, angry, damaged
young man,” says Duncan Larcombe, a former royals reporter who traveled with Prince Harry
throughout much of the early 2000s and is the
author of the new biography Prince Harry: The
Inside Story. “He had a circle of some friends who
weren’t a particular good influence on him.” In 2005
Harry’s picture wassplashed on frontpages around
the world showing the then-20-year-old wearing a
Nazi uniform at a costume party. He made headlines again after naked photos emerged from his
strip billiards game in Las Vegas in 2012. But
behind the scenes he had spiraled even further
than anyone realized. He only recently admitted
that after two years of “total chaos” he came close
to a “complete breakdown. My way of dealing with
it was sticking my head in the sand, refusing to think
about my mum,” he told theDaily Telegraph in 2017.

As he finally began to cope with his grief, he also
started to find a sense of order through his decade
of service in the British Army, including two tours
in Afghanistan. “He went into the army a young,
angry, reluctant prince and came out an accomplished pilot and a leader of men,” says Larcombe.
Harry’s service led him to found the Invictus
Games, his annual Paralympic-style competition
for wounded warriors. “You’d be getting changed
in the locker room at Invictus and Harry would
suddenly appear and say, ‘Let’s have a selfie!’ while
you’ve got your underwear on,” recalls one veteran. “He gives you time, and he speaks honestly
to you. I’ve heard him say a few times, ‘I always get
an honest answer off a squaddie [i.e., soldier].’
That’s the sort of bloke he is.” “My area of interest
will always be the veterans,” Harry told People in
May 2016. “For me it’s the difference between
being helpless and being able to help.”
His newfound sense of purpose brought a stability he had long lacked. “Harry’s drinking days
are over,” says a source. “All of his best friends have
settled and had children, so he’s had fewer people
to go out and play with. He realized he was getting
a bit older and that it was time to settle down a
little bit.” Adds Larcombe: “He desperately
wanted to get married and be happy. He sees his

A star following seven seasons on the USA hit
Suits, “Meghan was established before she met
Harry,” says the insider. “That’s a first for the royal
family. I don’t think Harry was ever going to marry
a nice upper-class girl from the [English] counties—it’s just not him. He’s found a great match in
her.” Today, Harry “is able to talk about how troubled he was and how he sought counseling—in no
small way, I imagine that’s Meghan’s influence on
him,” says Larcombe. “His antics over the years
mean that everyone can identify with him. He is a
reluctant royal because he is a prince of the people. The public feel a connection with Harry for all
those reasons that they probably don’t feel for any
other member of the royal family.”
In Meghan, he has found a trusted copilot with

In this excerpt
from Meghan:
A Hollywood
Princess, author
Andrew Morton
explores the star’s
preroyal roots
“Royal brides of the past
have been sort of blushing and red-faced,” says
Andrew Morton, whose
new biography of
Meghan Markle is out
April 17. “Meghan is articulate and relaxed and a
very different kettle of
fish.” Here, Morton looks
back at her Los Angeles
childhood.
It was clear that
Meghan had inherited
her mother’s strong
sense of right and wrong
and was prepared to
stand up for herself and
for others. On one occasion the so-called “mean
girls” announced that
they were starting a
“White Girls Only” club
and wanted Meghan to
join. “Are you kidding
me?” said Meghan to the
gaggle of fellow pupils,
dismissing them in a
sentence. They went
very quiet after that.
That playground confrontation highlighted
Meghan’s own concerns
about her identity.
Around this time,
Christmas 1988, she
tells the story of how her
father bought two sets
of Heart dolls containing
the traditional nuclear
family unit of mother,
father and two children.
He bought one with
black dolls, one with
white and mixed them
together to represent
Meghan’s own family.
Then he wrapped them
in sparkly Christmas
paper and placed the
box under the tree.
Her struggle to
understand herself and
where she was placed
in the scheme of
humanity instinctively
made her more aware of
those who had difficulties fitting in.
As [former schoolmate] Elizabeth McCoy
recalls: “You never forget the people who were
mean to you and who
was nice. That’s why
I have never forgotten
Meghan. She was one of
the most righteous
people I have ever met.
If someone was being
treated unfairly she
stuck up for them. On
one occasion I made the
girl who bullied me cry.
I tried to apologize and
Meghan sided with the
other girl because she
was the one in tears.
“Meghan called it
like it was. She was going
to defend those who
needed it. Her attitude
was: ‘I can see you are
hurt and I’m going
to protect you.’ She was
a genuinely decent
human being who
looked out for people
who needed help. She
gave a damn about people other than herself.”

with disorderly intoxication, battery on an oicer, resisting arrest

“It was so embarrassing and so

Three months later de Lesseps,
52, says the incident was also the
wake-up call she needed to finally
face her demons and change her life
for the better.
It had been a diicult 2017 for her. After a New

marriage ended just seven months later when
she realized he wouldn’t give up his “bachelor
lifestyle.” De Lesseps, who always drank alcohol
socially, says she began drinking more heavily on
a daily basis—at least seven drinks a day.
“I would start with a martini and maybe have
two martinis and then get into the wine at dinner,” she says. “Then I’d have a little bit of vodka
soda before going out.”
But eventually the alcohol wasn’t numbing
the pain. “I would have the hair-of-the-dog
drink the next day, and drink more, and it
didn’t feel good. Alcohol just stopped working
for me,” she says. As the holidays drew near,

“I couldn’t put my finger on why I was feeling
so anxious and why I was drinking more,” she
says now of returning to the scene of her failed
nuptials. “It makes sense.”
After her arrest, de Lesseps knew that she
needed a drastic change: “I couldn’t continue
living the way that I was living. The only
place where I felt like I was going to be okay
was rehab.” She also knew she had to have an
uncomfortable conversation with her children
explaining the arrest. “I told my children I did

around. “You lose a lot of friends when you
go to jail,” she says. “I think guys become less
interested when you go to jail and rehab. I haven’t even thought about a guy.”
So far she says she hasn’t been tempted to
drink but is taking things day by day. “Everybody
around me says, ‘Luann, you’re not an alcoholic.’
I don’t know if I am or not. All I know is that not
drinking works for me right now. Will I drink
again? I don’t know. I miss good red wine. Not to
say that I’ll never have good red wine again. Who
knows where we’ll all be tomorrow. For today,
that’s the choice that I’m making for myself.”
De Lesseps has also chosen to venture into
new forms of entertainment, creating a program
of sold-out cabaret shows entitled “#CountessAndFriends” at the Broadway venue Feinstein’s/54 Below, where she sings and hosts
Broadway entertainers and TV stars along
with Grammy-winning composer Billy Stritch.
“Music keeps me smiling,” she says.
With more upcoming performances and the
return of RHONY, de Lesseps says, she’s been
too busy to dwell on her April 13 appearance
in court, where she faces possible jail time if
convicted. She has pleaded not guilty to the
charges: “There were a lot of rumors about that
night. I’m looking forward for the court case to
finally come, because I want the truth to come
out.” Yet she’s not upset the arrest happened.
“Unless I was humiliated publicly, I don’t think
I would have done anything,” she says. “This
was a warning. It was meant to happen so that
I could take a step back and look at myself in a
diferent way. I’m grateful to the universe for
making me change my life.”

end of their nearly nine-year marriage.
“We have lovingly chosen to separate,”
they announced in a joint statement to
People on April 2. “We fell deeply in love
so many years ago and have had a magical

There are no secrets nor salacious events

Dewan hinted at trouble in an interview for

no one’s perfect,” she said. “I think there are such
things as great fits—it’s a great fit as long as you are
growing together, and I think up until this point
we’ve really grown together. . . . But we’re not perfect! Are you kidding? We fight like other couples,
we disagree about things, we have days where we

Together for 12 years after meeting at age 25, they

breaking into impromptu dance-offs at A-list
events and openly talking about the work they put
into their relationship. Now multiple sources say
they’ve been separated for months and Tatum has

more into a friendship rather than the passion they
felt when they first met and fell in love. That almost
made it harder for them to decide to separate
because there weren’t any huge issues, and there’s
not one person to point a finger at as the one who
screwed up. They fell out of love, and it was a tough
realization to come to.” Adds another source close

Dewan and Everly arranged their life around
his busy schedule, and more recently he spent
long stretches away from them filming. When
asked how he juggled career and family, Tatum
responded “not very well” in a 2015 interview
withPeople.“There are times we had planned
to take time of, but just like anything, things
come up,” he said. “None of this is easy, but
at the same time it’s everything I would have
ever wanted to do.” A source noticed a significant change in recent months. “When
Everly was younger, Channing and Jenna
used to spend a lot of family time together,” the source says. “For the past year they seem
to have spent less time together. Channing is often
out of town, and when she’s not working, Jenna is
a full-time mom and takes care of Everly’s daily
schedule.” Lately Tatum has been hard at work on
a slew of TV and film projects with producing partner Reid Carolin, while Dewan wrapped her second

While the couple have kept up with
cheerful social media posts, their last
red carpet together was last November
in support of War Dog: A Soldier’s Best

produced. They celebrated Dewan’s birthday in Mexico in December, but in February she stepped out solo at Vanity Fair’s
annual Oscar party, an event they usually
attended together. She told Entertainment

and “so happy to have a night of.”
Their romance began in classic Hollywood
style—when Tatum, who had once worked as a
stripper, and Dewan, a trained dancer who had
performed with Janet Jackson and Christina

and sparks flew. “I fell head over heels,” Tatum told

TROUBLE AT WORK?
The CDC disputes reports that Cunningham
had been denied a promotion before he disappeared.
And police say they don’t see a connection between
his work and his disappearance. Still, “he was

arvard-educated epidemiologist Dr. Timothy Cunningham had a gift for distilling
complex science into layman’s terms. “His
work—his reports, his research—was immaculate,” says a colleague at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
in Atlanta. And the unmarried 35-yearold put the same attentive care into the
tidy yellow home he shared with the dog he doted
on, Mr. “Bo” Bojangles. So after Cunningham left
work on the morning of Feb. 12, saying he was going home sick, everything was in its rightful place:
his car in the garage and his keys, wallet and phone
safely locked inside the house with Bo. All that was
missing, his parents and police discovered two days
later, was Cunningham, who had vanished without
a trace. “There’s a lot that I cannot simply explain,”
saysAtlanta police major Michael O’Connor.“This
is an extremely unusual set of circumstances.”

getting a promotion—something the CDC disputes. He was “commended all the time,” says a
coworker who asked not to be named. “He’s very
smart, but he also has the social skills that a lot of
scientists and doctors don’t have, frankly.”
Cunningham’s last traceable activity was a phone
call he made at 9:12 a.m. to his mother, Tia-Juana
Cunningham, which she missed; he didn’t leave a
message. She and his father, Terrell, appeared on
NBC to implore their son to contact them—and
seemed to suggest that something had been troubling him. “There [were] some work issues . . . areas
in his life, at that time, that warranted parents keepingin touch and keeping tabs on their son,” Terrell
said. Another inscrutable clue: The Saturday before
he disappeared, Cunningham saw neighbor Chris
Torry and “told me to take his number out of [my
wife’s] phone,” Torry told the local WAGA station, a
conversation police have confirmed occurred.
Friends and family holding out hope for a benign explanation for Cunningham’s disappearance—his parents are ofering a $15,000 reward
for locating him—keep coming back to Bo, alone
in the house. “That dog was his whole world,” says
neighbor Alison Lantana. “There’s nochance at all

Devil Wears Prada?
I think if everybody did it I would be up
for it. I almost hope it doesn’t, because
I think some [people] want to sequel
everything. It’s like it kind of dilutes
how special the original is.
What was the first meeting
with John like?
We were in a restaurant. I was sitting
with a friend. We were discussing how
much I was enjoying being single. And
then she goes, “Oh, my God, there’s my
friend John.” And that was it.
It was joyous. Such an iconic actress
played this iconic part ... but [director Rob Marshall] emboldens
you in such a huge way to make
everything your own. I had to do
my version of her. My perception
of her in the books was she’s batty.
She’s hilarious and incredibly
rude and vain. So it was really fun
to be given that freedom. I was
very inspired by His Girl Friday.
She comes in like a tornado.
When did you know he was the one?
Disarmingly soon. We were engaged
within 10 months.
It’s also your third movie
with Meryl Streep.
How did parenthood change you?
I know. Can she just get
her own projects?
I had not seen his version. I did a sort
of cram-watching several seasons.
I knew who he was . . . not terribly well.
My children’s happiness is the paramount thing in my life. I’m perpetually
in a state of distraction thinking about
them. You’re just shifted forever.
John directed A Quiet Place.
He’s a really good director.
How big a relief was that to you?
Massively. I always knew that he’s so
emotionally engaged, and he really understands how truth should come out
in a scene. But I didn’t think he knew
how to move the camera around. I was
like, “Oh, my God, he’s really good!”
You were off shooting Mary Poppins
Returns. When did you decide,
“I’m going to go do this movie about
the apocalypse”?
Well, I think I’ve just been too jolly
and magical for too long. I just needed
to go toward the darkness for a little
bit. When John was approached
about Quiet Place, I had just had our
second child. I remember sitting there
on the couch with our tiny newborn
baby, and he said, “I just got sent this
script.” I went, “You have to direct
that movie. That’s so cool.”
When you look back on the experience
of shooting Mary Poppins Returns,

Rhona, you’re the newest to the group,
but you actually joined back in 2003.
BENNETT I was a fan of the group before

joining. [I remember] “Hold On.” Especially
for the black community, that was our anthem. I’ve been on and of with the group for
14 years. When I flew up to the Bay to meet
with Terry and Cindy, we just clicked.
In the beginning
Herron-Braggs,
Robinson, Ellis and
Jones (from left in the
early ’90s) beat
out thousands

in En Vogue.
What was it like back in 1988, auditioning
to form a girl group with women you’d
never met?

In 1988 Cindy Herron-Braggs showed up to
an audition in Oakland, highly doubting
she’d get chosen for a new female singing act
being formed but determined to try her luck
anyway. “Honestly, I thought I’d just go to
this audition and go back to L.A. and
continue pursuing acting,” says HerronBraggs, 56. That return to L.A. took quite
the detour when she became a member of
En Vogue, the ’90s R&B group whose hits
like “My Lovin’ (You’re Never Gonna Get
It)” earned them comparisons to the
Supremes and turned Herron-Braggs, along
with Terry Ellis, 54, and former original
members Dawn Robinson and Maxine Jones
into stars. Now Ellis and Herron-Braggs,
joined by new member Rhona Bennett, 41,
are back with Electric Café, the first En
Vogue studio album in 14 years, and much
has changed. Sitting down to reminisce 27
years after their diva dreams first
came true, the singers reflect on
decades of sisterhood, struggles
and surviving stardom.
TOP RIGHT: EVERETT
It’s been almost 30 years since the
band formed, and now your new
single “Rocket” is on the Top 10.
Is that surreal?
ELLIS It feels like a big achieve-
ment, you know? We’re so grateful and honored to have lasted
this long.
HERRON-BRAGGS I can’t believe how fast the time has flown.
If you would have told me, “In
college and moved to the Bay Area to be a
part of the group, so it was really exciting
for me. I was like, “Wow, I’m following my
life’s dream.” The girls were great, the
music was amazing, and the producers
were awesome and respectful of women.
HERRON-BRAGGS I had just moved to Los
Angeles to pursue acting. . . . I was pretty
surprised when I found out that I was
accepted to be a member. Max and Dawn
and Terry became roommates. Max was
braiding hair; Terry was working at a bank.
It was cool being at the house, walking
around barefoot, pulling braid hair from
out of your toes. And there was always
music blasting.
ELLIS It was like a college dorm.
I remember hearing “Hold On” on the
radio. I lost it. We were just screaming
and hollering.
And many hits followed. But despite the
success, fans were shocked when the group
split up (Dawn left in 1997 and Maxine in
2001, both later blaming bad contracts and
payment issues).

I thought we had good deals. I
thought we had fair deals. We made

with that.
ELLIS That was never an issue for
me. I think the misconception
comes when artists say, “Oh, you’re
going to be in the band; they’re
going to take care of you.” I wasn’t
expecting anyone to take care of
me. We negotiated our deal, made

thing. It’s always been a balancing act,
but I’ve been adamant about being

With the #MeToo and Time’s Up
movements, this is a really important
time for female empowerment.
En Vogue was known for anthems
like “Free Your Mind.” How does your
new music fit in to this era?
BENNETT I’m a personal life coach.
I’m all about the inspiration and
motivation of people. With the
group, we all seem to resonate with
empowerment and respect.
ELLIS I see this as the perfect time,
because that’s been our platform
since day one, being women and
speaking and singing about how
important it is to be self-empowered,
to honor and be true to yourself. We
have a song on the new album called
“So Serious,” and it’s about the role
that a woman plays in a relationship
and how instead of walking behind
a man she should be walking beside
him, because she’s just as powerful.
Fame and fortune, especially in the
music industry, can be hard on some,
but after all these years you all still

there was four, now there was two,
and having to make the decision
to carry on the brand, we basically

decisions had to be made.

wraps up its final season. She does not,
however, take a rock-star approach to
tidying up. While she admits her family leans toward the messy (“The epitome of hippies!”), Stella is meticulous:
“I clean every day. It’s calming to me.”
Also part of her regular routine: visits

ADVICE FROM A PRO
How to
Tackle Pet
Allergies
PEOPLE PET VET DR. EVAN ANTIN
SHARES TIPS FOR ALLERGY
SUFFERERS LOOKING TO ADOPT
1. Hypoallergenic
isn’t allergy-free
Some breeds of dogs
and cats produce fewer
allergens, but any
pet has the
potential to
cause allergies.
There’s no 100
percent hypoallergenic
guarantee,
because
there’s always
someone
allergic to the
skin or fur of a
certain breed.
2. The breed
can matter
Poodles, Malteses
and other dogs with
hair instead of fur can
cause fewer allergies
in people. Russian
blue, Balinese and
Siberian cats produce
less of the protein
many are allergic to.
3. It’s not just
about the fur
Irritating pet allergens
come from the flaky
dander found on
your pet. This dander
comes from the fur,
hair and skin cells that
your pet sheds.
4. Grooming
goes a long way
Regular pet grooming
appointments can
help reduce the
spread of allergens in
your home. Keeping
your pet’s fur and
skin hydrated keeps
allergies in check too.
5. Foster first
Fostering a pet is
a great way for those
with allergies to
explore their tolerance
to the animal before
making a serious
commitment.
6. Seek out
other mammals
Rabbits can be a good
option for pet lovers
who are allergic to cats
and dogs because
they have different
proteins in their fur.

CAUSES OF ALLERGIES
Pets can be allergic to plants,
flea bites or ingredients
in their food. They may need
to go on an elimination
diet to figure out the source.
KNOW THE SIGNS
Itchy skin is a common symptom
for pets with allergies. Pets will
often excessively lick and scratch
their paws, rear or abdomen
when they are irritated by allergies.
HUMAN MEDS WORK
Vets will often prescribe pets
with allergies the same
antihistamines—like Claritin,
Benadryl and Zyrtec—that are
given to human allergy sufferers.

suing the coffee industry
and alleging that the levels
of acrylamide—a chemical
produced when coffee beans
are roasted—in an average
cup of coffee are potentially
dangerous to consumers.
Coffee producers—along
with most doctors and
researchers—strongly
disagree, insisting that the
amount of acrylamide poses
no significant threat to
consumers. “There’s some
acrylamide in coffee, but
we’re talking about very, very
low levels—trace amounts,”
says Dr. Geoffrey Kabat, a
cancer epidemiologist at
the Albert Einstein College
of Medicine. In 2016 the
World Health Organization
removed coffee from its list
of “possible carcinogens,”
and the American Cancer
Society says that “there
—DR. GEOFFREY
KABAT
are currently no cancer
types for which there is
clearly an increased risk
related to acrylamide
intake.” Kabat also says
there have been hundreds
of scientific studies “and
massive amounts of
information” in the past 20
years demonstrating the
health benefits from regular
coffee consumption. And
“what they’re all finding,” he
adds, “is that either there’s
no association between
coffee and cancer, or coffee
appears to be protective.”
Nonetheless Judge Berle
found that the 90 companies
named in the lawsuit—
including Starbucks, Dunkin’
Donuts and Peet’s—failed to
prove their case against the
effects of acrylamide. They
have until April 10 to appeal,
after which the final stage
of the trial will determine
civil penalties—where coffee
shops could wind up paying
up to $2,500 for every coffee
drinker each day since the
lawsuit was filed in 2010.
“This benefits no one,” says
Kabat. “It keeps people
focused on the wrong
things, and it provides
no useful guidance for
what people should do.”

Last time I felt like a kid
Doing the Roseanne revival. It was such a
flashback to another time. I did an episode
with [former costar] Johnny Galecki, and it
was so emotional. After one of the scenes
we were hugging each other and crying.
Last time I was frustrated
When I can’t get the kids [Levi, 13, Sawyer,
10, and Rhodes, 2] to bed on time. The
nighttime routine gets longer and longer.
It’s “Will you read me a story, and then put
on the aromatherapy diffuser, and then
give me another hug and kiss,
and then will you get me a water?” At
some point they’re just playing me!
Last romantic gesture
[My wife, songwriter Linda Perry]
is good with the big gestures. She sent me
three flower arrangements on Valentine’s
Day—one at work, two at home—and also
balloons for each of the kids.
Last time I danced
I don’t dance. I have no rhythm. But
Lionel Richie was on my talk show, and
they were playing one of his songs,
and I was like, “I think my feet are moving!”
If someone was watching, they’d say, “Sara,
that’s not dancing.” But I couldn’t help it.
