CUTTING TECHNIQUES
There is an emotion in hair; like
clothing, it reflects the life of its
owner. Time leaves its traces and
there is a sense of authenticity
in hair’s wear and tear. ‘Lived-in’
looks are created through classic
layering and disconnection for
an ‘undone’ editorial feel. Mohair
textures give a distressed feel to
loose, one-length hair with hidden
areas cut into the shape. Organic

CUTTING TECHNIQUES
The Sassoon discipline of line, graduation
and disconnection are used to create the
feel of hair in motion. Shapes are worked
internally giving structure to the overall
look. Edges are added organically, taking
their cues from the feel of the internal
shape. Fronts are long and loose, layered
through from the crown creating versatile
cuts that can be worn in different ways.

“In 2008 photographer Ari Seth Cohen and
film-maker Lina Plioplyte started the blog
Advanced Style to draw attention to the
innovative clothing worn by older woman,
those usually considered ‘invisible’ by the
fashion system. Participants such as Iris Apfel
wear an eclectic assortment of couture,
vintage and DIY clothing in bold block
colours and graphic shapes, many of which
are reminiscent of the experimental designs
of the grand couturier Cristobal Balenciaga.
Balenciaga, like Vidal Sassoon, was a
modernist in essence, obsessed with
the properties of material and the
myriad ways in which it could be
cut and constructed, continually
redefining and exploring his
innovative cutting techniques.”

COLOURING TECHNIQUES
This season, precise sectioning and weaving techniques
are used to create the perfect blend of colour placement
within the cut. Slices, fine back-to-back panels and classic
weaves give a multi-tonal texture to the hair and add depth
and shine to solid shapes. Colours are concealed and
convertible, designed to work with the parting of the hair
revealing slight-of-hand shades on the left or the right. The
Couture Colour palette comprises rich copper red infused
with soft gold and vibrant orange, cool dark brown with
accents of caramel and navy blue. Light, natural blonde is
enhanced with ice white, pale lilac and soft gold.

into the creation of the latest KeraStraight photographic
collection, The Canvas.
“The direction that we’re moving in with the latest
KeraStraight photoshoot is showcasing undone and
wearable haircuts. It’s based on a concept I call session
cutting, where you have the taste of the session world
but the technique of the hairdressing world. When these
come together there’re a lot of interesting avenues to
explore with each cut.
“KeraStraight creates a canvas for us to be creatively
free. The base and structure of the hair has to be good.
“The Canvas collection presents a fresh vision of
the benefits of healthy hair and the freedom it gives
hairdressers and their clients. Healthy, easy-tomanage hair shouldn’t be limited to any hair type,
texture or length, so we asked Tom Connell and the
Trevor Sorbie Art Team to create a collection that
represents inspiration, creativity and freedom.”

For example, if you’re razor-cutting hair and the hair isn’t
in a healthy condition, it’s going to stress it out. With
KeraStraight, whether it’s a model or a client, I can create
the condition I need, which gives me maximum freedom
when cutting.
“I can’t stress enough that the character of the model’s
face is so important when creating an editorial image.
When we were developing a style and a look for the new
KeraStraight shoot and were looking for the model, I
wrote a little script about who that character would be,
what she would wear, what she would look like, and
where she would work. I can then build this person that
we’re appealing to with this collection.
“She’s the type of girl who gets complimented on her
hair all the time, it looks amazing even if she only spent
five minutes on it in the morning. This is also why we
went with the new tag line, ‘Thanks…It’s KeraStraight’
“I’m forever looking at images from the Britpop era, the
New Romantics and even the more sculpted men’s styles.
I like to trace those images and place them on top of the
girls in the magazines that are considered fashionable
today – there are so many workable combinations. At the
end of this process I end up creating something current.
“It’s really important to me not to do a haircut that
starts on the shoot and ends on the shoot. I’m cutting a
haircut on a person, not a technique on a model. It’s the
same with my clients in the salon, if the hair is not in the
correct condition for a cut, it doesn’t work to give them
that style. With KeraStraight I can deliver the haircut
they want and provide them with quality hair condition
that’s going to last.

2 CUT: Cut all the hair to one length.
3 When cutting the sides, angle just
slightly forwards.
4 Disconnect a section at the front.
Consider the texture of the hair for
the size of the section needed.
5 Blow-dry smooth with a paddle

Interiors
House of Quirk in Cheshire lives up to its name
H
usband and wife Tom and Rae Mann have taken
an abandoned café and turned it into a thriving
town centre salon, that aims to set design trends
rather than follow them.
Set in the centre of Northwich in Cheshire, the salon
brings a welcoming, but fashionable business to the high
street location. Says Tom: “We wanted the salon to be
comfortable and non-threatening, while maintaining a
high-end feel.”
The end result involved the former interior being ripped
out, including the removal of a number of walls, to create
the open plan space desired. Earthy colours and bare brick
walls create a warm, natural feel, as do a multitude of green
plants, dotted throughout the space.
Tiffany lampshades add a touch of glass and class to
the main salon, including two parrot-shaped lamp shades
above the reception desk. LED lighting dominates, apart
from in the backwash area where dimmers offer a more
relaxing environment. The backwash area also sports dark
green tiles, for a classic, wash house look.
The reception area epitomises the quirky nature of the
salon, featuring a rustic-style desk, with the salon logo
grafted to the front. The floor is composed of mosaic
‘Persian rug’ tiles, while furniture comprises classic chairs
in mismatching fabrics, for a slightly Boho feel.
Not surprisingly, Tom says the salon attracts clients with
a flare for individuality.

L
ooking after my clients in the salon is still
what I enjoy most about my job. I also love my
creative work and bringing ideas to life. I get to
collaborate with like-minded individuals and
push the boundaries. I enjoy the cross over from fashion,
art and film and being totally out of your comfort zone
often produces the best results.
The hairdressing world gets more and more
exciting every year. I feel like it’s constantly
changing and moving. There is room for everyone
in our industry to express their creativity and
work and I believe that is so important. I love that
the industry is now a global world and the cross
over into fashion, art and film is really exciting.
There are also many more great platforms now
where you can get noticed and/or inspired which
is fantastic for the younger generation.
If Johanna Cree Brown was a brand, the
brands I would aspire to try and emulate would
be both Apple and Dutch fashion designer Iris
Van Herpen. Iris Van Herpen because she is in love
with inventing new forms
and methods. Apple always
do something new and bold,
driven by evolving in today’s
fast-paced world. Both these
brands are brands I love!
I don’t think you can
ever pinpoint where
inspiration comes from as
it really is everywhere; artists, photographers,
fashion designers and multimedia artists are
creative creatures and their work is inspiring. The
Natural History Museum or the Science Museum are
always good environments, art exhibitions, a shop window
you pass, Instagram, talking with the team, or even a
conversation you have with a client.
These days with our phones it’s so easy to photograph and catalogue our work and the things we see
every day or travelling, so you need to get your hands
busy. Start working on your ideas straight away. Try and
layer your references and don’t be too literal with your
source of inspiration. This might mean re-visiting other

ideas, so it’s good to keep a visual record
or collect materials and fabrics and
combine various ideas together
and let them evolve. Sometimes
it’s instant and a simple idea and

During the creative process,
I like to try new materials or
different approaches to the hair
to see what’s possible. When I
think I might have something
I’m excited about I share it with
the team and the people I love
to collaborate with to see if they are excited about it too.
Once an idea is complete, I will then show it to Trevor.
One career goal I still have would be to continue
exploring the potential of film. I’ve collaborated with
Roger Spy for about seven years now, producing many
hair and fashion videos. We also have so many more
great ideas we want to explore, so it would be wonderful
to keep progressing and working with hairdressing on
different mediums. Ultimately, I would love to keep
evolving, sharing, supporting and enjoying our amazing
industry.
