Tickle your child’s hand as you read this poem. What interesting tiny neighbors can you and
your child find outside? If you want to let your child hold one, pick it up and gently place it
in your child’s hand. If not, just look without touching.
SONG
GAART
usy Bee
(To the tune of
“The Farmer in the Dell”)
B-z-z-z, bee, to my flowers.
B-z-z-z, bee, to my trees.
B-z-z-z, bee, to my bushes.
But please, bee, don’t b-z-z-z me!
Some children think the unfamiliar buzzing of a bee sounds scary. Singing the song in a
playful way can help ease your child’s fears.

After your child finds these three tiny friends, enjoy the rest of the picture. How many circles
can you find? (Don’t worry. These critters aren’t in the house! This is an apartment balcony
with a railing.)

Spider,
Spider, spider,
Weave and spin
Down, around,
And up again.
As you read, gesture down,
around, and up, then tilt your
head on your hand to rest.
Outdoors, look for spider
webs and show your child
their intricate, delicate lines.
Spider
Spider, spider,
Time to rest
IIn your round
And webby nest.

Waiting,
waiting . .
Luna moth soon.
This little story is filled with delicious words you and your
child can savor together. Say them slowly as you point to
the pictures. Your toddler may enjoy repeating them even
before he knows exactly what the story means. If he asks,
you can say the caterpillar eats moonflower leaves, grows,
goes into a cocoon, and comes out a beautiful moth.
Surprise your little one by making creatures from
bits of fruit. They don’t have to look real. Yum!
