Introduction
• Thomas Gainsborough is an
outstanding English portrait
and landscape painter of the
18th century.
• Our aim is to examine the
artistic career of Thomas
Gainsborough.
2. Special features of Gainsborough paintings
• Gainsborough succesfully
connected man and nature in
his
paintings.
“Robert
Andrews and his wife” is
one of his first paintings.
The young man and his wife
are
painted
on
the
background of a scenery. It
is one of the best realistic
paintings of the English art
school.
3. Landscapes of Gainsborough
• Thomas
Gainsborough
considered
himself
a
landscape painter, but had to
paint aristocrat’s portraits.
Works of the old masters
such as Rubens casted over
the composition of this
painting of Gainsborough.
• In
1787
Gainsborough
creates one of his best
landscapes “The Market
cart”. Countryside family
comes back home from the
market. The evening autumn
sun lights up the road. This
landscape is noble. Light
colours of the sky, the
simplicity and realism of
this painting anticipate the
work of Constable.
4. Children in Gainsborough paintings
• “The Painter’s Daughters
Chasing a Butterfly is one of
the lyric and touching
paintings of Gainsborough.
It is inspired with gleams of
the summer evening and
children
sincerity.
The
picture
is
full
of
Gainsborough admiration of
the world of nature: leaves,
clouds, air itself.
The Blue Boy
• “The Blue Boy” is one of
the most famous pictures of
Gainsborough. Blue is the
favourite colour of the
painter. In this picture it is
enriched with tones of
leaves and the sky and
creates a magnificent colour
symphony.
Cottage Girl with Dog and Pitcher
• In his late years Thomas
Gainsborough paints the
life of countryside. One
of the painting of this
genre is “Cottage Girl
with Dog and Pitcher”.
Women portraits
• Portrait of a Lady in Blue is
a work of art. Her parted
lips, fleeting glance and
graceful gesture of her hand
help to create a true
impression of the sitter’s
vitality and optimism. The
woman in the picture is
alive, and we have a feeling
that she is looking at us.
Mrs. Richard Brinsley Sheridan
• This picture is striking of
virtuoso technique, while
his model is marked by
particular
refinement,
poeticality and spirituality
of feelings. This portrait is
optimistic and the light and
shade of colour are in full
harmony with the lines.
Conclusion
• I like Thomas Gainsborough paintings very much. I prefer his
landscapes because they are very romantic.
